Jordanian King to Visit Russia

Jordanian King Abdallah II will arrive in Moscow Sunday for a three-day official visit to strengthen his private relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the ties between their countries, the Kremlin press service said Saturday.

It will be the first visit by Abdallah II to Russia since he became king of Jordan in February 1999.

The main aim of the king's visit is to expand his personal contacts with Putin. The two leaders will exchange opinions on a wide range of issues, especially on the situation in the Middle East and a possibility to unblock the peace process, Jordanian Ambassador to Russia Ahmed Ali Mubaidin told reporters here.

Abdallah II will also discuss with Russian leaders prospects for boosting ties in different fields, including trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, according to the Kremlin.

Abdallah II and his wife will lay flowers to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Red Square, and visit Russia's second biggest city of St. Petersburg and the city of Tula, some 100 miles south of Moscow.

The king's upcoming negotiations with Putin should become "an important step for strengthening Moscow's relations not only with Jordan, but also with other Arab countries," as Jordan and the Arab world in general are "interested in Russia's more active role in the Middle East peace progress," Mubaidin said.

It is possible that the sides will talk about military- technical cooperation between Moscow and Amman, and cooperation in the spheres of energy and investment, said the ambassador.

He said the king will be accompanied by a large group of Jordanian businessmen. It is planned to sign several agreements and protocols during the visit.

Putin and Abdallah II already met at the Millennium Summit in New York last autumn.
