Ukraine's Golden Girl Yana Klochkova Withdraws from Universiade

Ukraine's Olympics and world champion Yana Klochkova was forced to withdraw from the 21st World University Games due to illness after she became the first double- gold medalist in Beijing on Saturday.

Klochkova, winner at Sydney Olympic Games in 200m and 400m medley, won the women's 200 meters individual medley in two minutes 14.13 seconds, a new Universiade record after she took the trophy in 800m freestyle on the opening day of the Universiade.

"I am satisfied with my results tonight. I have got a cold and my throat is hurting. So I have to give up my 400m freestyle early before the 200m medley," Klochkova said after her 200m medley.

The 19-year-old Ukraine, who swept titles in women's 400m medley and 400m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan last month, finished eighth in 400m freestyle heats and quit from the final while her teammate Olena Lapunova, who placed ninth after her in the morning heat, took part in the finals and finished the last.

"So I have to give up my 400m medley in this Games because I feel really bad," she said.

Klochkova said she is planning to return home on August 27 and prepare for the Goodwill Games which is to kick off in Brisbane, Australia on August 29.
