Xian Clinches China's Fourth Judo Gold in Women's 52kg

Veteran Xian Dongmei clinched China's fourth judo gold Saturday through victory in the women's under 52kg category at the 21st Universiade in Beijing on Saturday.

Xian, who eased into the final with three straight ippon victories, lit up the gymnasium when she threw Russian Oxana Karzakova for the fourth ippon to take the title.

The bronze medal went to French Ellentie Merle and An Kum Ae of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"I'm very excited at the result, for it's out of my expectation. " Xian said at the press conference.

The 26-year-old Xian attributed her victory to hard training and the home-court advantage. But she also admitted "my opponents in today's competition are even worse than some judokas I met in domestic competitions."
