Tibet Aided to Improve Transportation Conditions

Machinery for highway maintenance worth 31 million yuan (3.7 million US dollars) was donated Saturday to the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China by transportation departments across the country.

The 75 sets of mechanical loaders, diggers, bulldozers, over 30, 000 communications books and 10 notebook computers are expected to help improve the ability of highway maintenance and ensure a good traffic condition of the region, said Hu Xijie, vice-minister of communications, at a donation ceremony here.

Before the peaceful liberation of Tibet 50 years ago, there was no highway in the region. However, over the past five decades, more than 22,500 kilometers of highways have been built in Tibet. The highway network has greatly promoted the economic growth of the region.
