Four Chinese Fencers Crashed out of Men's Individual Epee Competition

China's four fencers had aunlucky day Saturday when all of them were crashed out of the men's individual epee event at the 21st World University Games on Saturday.

Xiao Jian, who is ranked 207th by the International Fencing Federation, was beaten by a Canadian fencer when fighting for the 16 best. In a previous round, Tian Liang was kicked out by a Ukrainian swordsman.

Another two fencers of the Chinese team, Wang Lei and Xie Yongjun were eliminated in the tryouts Saturday morning.

Zhao Lizhong, coach of the Chinese national team, said that the Chinese fencers greatly lag behind the world level in epee fencing. The loss of individual epee competition was not unexpected, Zhao said.

However, the Chinese fencers planned to try all out to step into quarter-finals of the team epee competition, he said.

Many well-known epee fencers joined the ongoing universiade, such as first-ranked Jorg Fiedler and seventh-ranked Daniel Strigel, both from Germany, eighth-ranked Christoph Marik from Austria, 14th-ranked Attila Fekete from Hungary and 17th-ranked Marcel Fischer from Switzerland.
