Chinese Divers Strive for Fourth Diving Gold

Chinese divers launched a powerful campaign Saturday for a fourth diving gold at the World University Games when Wang Tianling and Wang Feng went to the men's 3m springboard final as the top two.

Wang Tianling and Wang Feng led the 18-man semi-final field throughout the five rounds of dives and widened the gap between them and others with each dive. Wang Tianling got 688.02 points from his six preliminary and five semifinal dives, 15 points ahead of Wang Feng, whom he beat into second in the men's 1m springboard final Thursday.

Mexico's Fernando Platas, silver medalist in the event at Sydney Olympics last year, was 24 points back with 649.26 points to place third.

Japan's Ken Terauchi, who won a bronze medal in the 3m springboard last month at the Fukuoka World Championships, finished fourth with 628.65 points, to be followed by Russian Vassili Lissovski at 608.37 points.

Imre lengyel from Hungary was sixth with 604.92 points. Cuban Jose Guerra, the men's 10m platform titlist at the 1999 Universiade, followed him with 596.40 points.

The men's 3m springboard final will start at 8:00 Saturday evening at the same venue, Tsinghua University Natatorium.

China have been dominating the Universiade diving pool, snatching three one-two in as many events in the past two days.
