NATO to Discuss Weapons Collection With Macedonia
NATO's Balkan special envoy Pieter Feith said Friday that NATO would hold talks with Macedonian Government on the number of weapons ethnic Albanian rebels should hand over, reports said.
After his meeting with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski who just returned from Ukrania, Feith said that "the meeting is very fruitful on the number of arms." "We will find a number of weapons that be accepted by all sides."
According to Feith, experts affiliated with the Macedonian government will discuss about collecting weapons with NATO officials Sunday. Some NATO officials disclosed that ethnic Albanian rebels would surrender 3,000 light weapons to NATO under the agreement reached between them and NATO earlier Thursday.
The Macedonian authorities estimated that the so-called National Liberation Army (NLA) has more than 85,000 weapons, including 9,000 light weapons and plenty of anti-tank rockets as well as several tanks grabbed from the Macedonian Security Forces.
