Macao's Unemployment Rate Down

Macao's unemployment rate stood at 6.3 percent in the May-July period, down slightly 0.1 percentage points from that of the April-June period, according to the latest official statistics.

Figures released Friday by the Statistics and Census Services show that the May-July jobless rate went down 0.7 percentage points from that of the same 2000 period.

A total of 13,700 Macao people were still reportedly jobless, while the employed population stood at 204,200 in the three-month period.

The labor force reached an estimated 218,000 people in the three-month period, constituting about half of Macao's population, according to statistics.

The sectors reporting more employees include real estate, renting, wholesale and retail sales, finance, manufacturing and construction, while the unemployment situation became even worse in the catering industry.

The construction and manufacturing industries still experience a shortage of employees in Macao, the source said.
