Samaranch Released from Barcelona HospitalFormer International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch was discharged from a Barcelona hospital on Friday, August 24, and given the all-clear to resume his normal schedule, according to reports from Barcelona. The 81-year-old Samaranch will continue to undergo regular medical check-ups, though, after being treated for "acute complications resulting from high blood pressure" at the Quiron Clinic in the Catalan capital. A statement released by the clinic on Friday said he had been released at 1800 local time (1600 GMT). "The patient can resume his normal activities," Dr Rafael Esteban Mur, the chief of medical services at the clinic, said in the statement. "He will continue to have periodic tests." Samaranch was taken to hospital in Lausanne with breathing problems caused by "extreme tiredness" following his exhausting schedule at the Moscow meeting. Samaranch left hospital 10 days later after doctors at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne judged that he had made enough progress to be discharged. He was readmitted to hospital following his return to his home city of Barcelona. Samaranch is now the IOC's life president and is set to continue his role as head of the foundation that looks after the Olympic museum, which is to be renamed the Samaranch Olympic Museum.
