Men's Basketball Ends up First Round

Top teams all went through to the 1-16 finals after the first-round matches were concluded in Beijing on Friday, August 24, in the men's basketball competition.

In Group A, China defeated Greece 96-75 but both teams enter the top 16. British Virgin Island fell short with a 1-2 record though it beat Angola 76-59.

The United States and Turkey took the 1-2 finish in Group B after the Americans won their third game in row, beating Turkey 113-90. South Africa held off Iran for its first win, 68-48.

Canada overwhelmed Japan, 99-75; Britain ousted Russia, 72-66; Lithuania disposed off the Czech Republic, 93-85. All the six teams qualify for the 1-16 finals.

Yugoslavia defeated Bulgaria, 96-53; South Korea beat Mexico, 89-78; Brazil defeated Peru, 82-60. The winners, alongside with Ukraine, Germany and Sweden, also book places in the top 16.

The competition will have a rest day on Saturday and resume on Sunday for the round-robin second round matches.

China's top center Wang Zhizhi, who serves for the Dallas Mavericks of America's National Basketball Association (NBA), scored 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Friday's final first- round game.

Wang, 2.14 meters, scored 12 points in straight, 5-5 in the field, to put China at 39-25 at the start of the second quarter to have the good of the game.

China's another promising center Yao Ming, a 21-year-old of 2. 25 meters, held down 17 rebounds in addition to his 19 points.

Kyritisis Alexander led Greece with 28 points when he was 8-18 in the field though the team was only 23-77.

Yugoslavia overpowered Bulgaria in the first quarter by doubling the score, 32-16, and rolled to hold its opponents to just eight points in the following quarter to insure the victory.
