Xiaolangdi Dam Resumes Power Generation

The Xiaolangdi Dam, the largest on the Yellow River, resumed generating power Thursday.

Due to a recent spate of storms along the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the water level of the reservoir behind the dam climbed to the level for power generation.

The Xiaolangdi Project, the largest ever to harness the Yellow River, is expected to bring comprehensive social and economic returns to the area, including flood control, power generation, tourism and irrigation.

Since spring this year, rainfall in the projected area had dropped 90 percent from the average level of normal years, causing a serious water shortage.

On June 30, all the generating units at the dam were forced to stop production, because of the dropping of the water level.

At present, efforts are still needed because the water level remains unstable, local official in charge of the project said.
