China Has Easy Day in Universiade Table Tennis

China has an easy opening day in the Beijing Universiade table tennis tournament as both of its men's and women's team rolled over their respective opponents in the group competition.

China's men's team drubbed Sri Lanka and South Africa, while the women's teams squad swept past Macao of China and Moldova, all with identical score of 3-0.

China did not send its best paddlers today in competitions. Top two male paddlers, Wang Liqin and Liu Guozheng, did not appear in the field at the same time, while first female seed Zhang Yining was benched in the competition against Moldova.

With the wins, Chinese men's paddlers advanced into the top 16 while the women's team, the quarter-finals.

South Korea and Chinese Taipei also advanced in both men's and women's events without dropping a single set.

However, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea met a strong challenge from Japan and lost the match 3-2.

A total of 25 men's teams in eight groups and 18 women's teams in four pools are competing in first stage. Top two teams from each group will advance to the knock-out main competitions.

The rest matches in first stage will finish Friday.
