China Marks 100th Birth Anniversary of Late Marshal
Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Thursday addressed a gathering marking the 100th birth anniversary of the late marshal Chen Yi (1901-72).

The gathering was sponsored by China's Central Military Commission.

Jiang reviewed Chen's whole life, praising him as a great revolutionary, strategist and diplomat.

Jiang spoke highly of Chen's contribution to the country, saying that he was one of the founders of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and one of the great state leaders.

The president called on those present to learn from Chen for his integrity and willingness to serve the people and the country.

A native of Sichuan Province, Chen Yi was a late PLA marshal and former vice-premier and foreign minister of China.
