HK Labor Department Sets Up Tripartite Committee on Retail Industry

The Hong Kong Labor Department has set up a Tripartite Committee on Retail Industry to enhance communication and employment relations at the industry level.

The committee, comprising representatives from employers' associations, trade unions and the government, held its first meeting Wednesday.

Addressing the inaugural meeting, Pamela Tan Kam Mi-wah, commissioner for labor, said retail industry is one of the major industries in Hong Kong and there are more than 55,000 establishments employing over 210,000 people.

"We hope to strengthen communication between employers and employees in the industry and hence improve its competitiveness by setting up the tripartite committee," she said.

The committee provides a forum for members to exchange views on matters of common concern and look for improvements in labor relations, she said, adding that this would in turn improve productivity and facilitate the development of the industry.
