Openwave Names HK As Asia Pacific Headquarters

Openwave Systems Inc., a worldwide leader in open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, named Hong Kong as its Asia Pacific headquarters Wednesday.

With mobile phone penetration rates in China's Hong Kong and Taiwan as well as South Korea ranking among the highest in the world, the company believes that these markets show a strong propensity for adopting new innovations.

China's Ministry of Information Industry reported at the end of July that there were 120.6 million mobile phone subscribers in China, thereby surpassing the U.S. as the world largest cellular market.

"Openwave's market-leading products, global experience and local presence are key elements of our strategy in the Asia Pacific Region," said Brian Plackis, acting general manager of Openwave Asia Pacific.

According to Plackis, a cornerstone of Openwave's growth plans in the region is to market the Openwave Services OS suite of open, IP-based mobile Internet software, which is designed to enable mobile operators to rapidly create and deploy new revenue- generating services while providing mobile subscribers with a more compelling, easy-to-use, and personalized mobile Internet experience.

To date, Openwave customers in Asia Pacific include several best-of-breed carriers -- China Mobile, Shanghai Telecom, Hutchison Telecom, Sunday, Taiwan Cellular, KG Telecom, LG Telecom, StarHub, Telecom New Zealand and Telstra Australia, among others.
