Xanana Calls for Peaceful Elections

East Timorese independence leader Xanana Gusmao has joined calls for a peaceful election, as 400 thousand voters prepare to cast their ballot for the territory's first assembly next week.

Mr Gusmao - likely to be the territory's first president - has urged voters to boycott anyone and any party inciting its members to continue the kind of violence leading up to the 1999 independence vote. He's also urged his former troops, not to glorify their years of guerilla warfare.
