Samaranch Could Leave Hospital Within DaysFormer International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch could leave hospital within days after kidney dialysis, a source close to him said Tuesday.IOC director general Francois Carrard meanwhile confirmed 81- year-old Samaranch had been in a Barcelona hospital for at least two weeks but said he was expected to leave hospital within the next few days. "I had a lengthy chat with him today and he seemed to be in perfect shape, both mentally and physically," said Carrard. "He told me 'in a few days I'll be able to leave hospital'." Samaranch, who stepped down from his post as IOC president and was succeeded by Jacques Rogge in July, was admitted to hospital two weeks ago, shortly after being released from a Lausanne hospital on July 27. The source in Barcelona said Samaranch had been admitted to the Quiron clinic for treatment for exhaustion and he had been given dialysis for a kidney problem which was not life-threatening. The clinic was expected to release a statement on Samaranch's condition later on Tuesday. Samaranch is believed to have been exhausted after the IOC Congress in Moscow at which Rogge was elected and Beijing won the right to host the 2008 Olympics. |
