France Beats South Africa in Universiade Women's Soccer

The French women's soccer team defeated South Africa 9-1 in the opener of the soccer tournament at the 21st World University Games on Tuesday, one day before the opening ceremony.

In the match held in Ying Tung Stadium in Beijing University of Physical Culture and Sports, the French side, playing in Group C, scored the opener 13 minutes into the game and led the halftime 3- 1.

The French girls continued their superiority and control of the game in the second half, sealing the win at 9-1.

A total of 12 teams are competing in the women's soccer tournament. After preliminary round robins in four groups with three teams each, top two group winners advance into the quarter- finals.

Following are the groupings:

Group A: China, Brazil, Finland

Group B: Japan, Canada, Poland

Group C: South Korea, South Africa, France

Group D: DPR Korea, Mexico, Netherlands
