The typhoon hit land on Wakayama Prefecture in western Japan shortly after 7 p.m., after moving slowly northward across the Pacific Ocean south of Shikoku during the day. It could reach the Tokyo area Wednesday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Sixteen people in Shizuoka, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara and Kochi prefectures were injured.
