Sri Lankan Tamil Rebels Attack Police Station in EastSri Lankan separatist Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a police station in the Eastern Province of the country, about 170 kilometers east of capital Colombo on Tuesday, military officials said.The attack by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels on the Central Camp police station in the Ampara district started on 12:30 a.m. and the reinforcements had reached the camp at about 4. 30 in the morning, Military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said. He said that eight LTTE bodies have been found and 17 injured policemen were admitted to Ampara hospital and four of them who are in serious condition were sent to National hospital in Colombo. He said that LTTE rebels also attacked an adjoining Special Task Force camp. The rebels suffered heavy casualties but the exact figure is not immediately known, he added. The LTTE rebels have been fighting for an independent Tamil homeland in the island's north and the east since 1983. More than 64,000 people have been killed in the fighting. |
