Five Dead in Latest U.S. Killing Spree

A 27-year-old man stabbed his wife to death Monday and then drove to a home in a nearby suburb and killed four more people before fleeing with a 2-year-old child, authorities said.

The victims and suspect were believed to be related, Sacramento County (California,U.S.) sheriff's Sgt. James Lewis said.

"We want to get this guy off the streets as quickly as possible," he said. He identified the suspect as Nikolay Soltys.

Police called by a neighbor found the body of Soltys' wife at a home in North Highlands. The other victims ¡ª two elderly adults, a 9-year-old girl and an infant ¡ª were found at a home in Rancho Cordova, about seven miles away.

The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities did not immediately describe the wounds of the four victims who were found together, though a hospital spokeswoman said the girl had been stabbed.

Lewis said officers believe the 2-year-old was taken from the home by the suspect. Language problems between family members and police slowed the investigation.

"Everybody's Russian ¡ª neighbors, relatives, everybody," Lewis said.

Oleg Bogush, a 19-year-old neighbor, said he has known Soltys for more than a year, since Soltys moved from the Ukraine.

"Almost anyone who lives in this area knows him," Bogush said, adding that Soltys was a quiet man. He also said Soltys' wife moved to the Sacramento area a few months ago with their child.
