Iran Calls for Weapon Sanctions Against Israel

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi on Monday urged the Arab and Muslim world to pursue weapon sanctions against Israel, saying that the aggravation of Palestinian crisis will spin the region out of control.

Kharazi made the remarks as a reaction to a upcoming meeting of Arab foreign ministers, the official IRNA news agency reported.

At the request of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat amid escalating Israeli aggressions against the Palestinians, foreign ministers of an Arab follow-up committee will hold an emergency meeting at the headquarters of Arab League in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday to discuss the latest Mideast tensions.

The committee, set up at the Cairo Arab summit last October, deals with the implementation of resolutions adopted at the summit, in which Arab leaders pledged to provide moral and financial aid to the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.

Kharazi welcomed the forthcoming Cairo meeting and expressed the hope that the gathering will help defuse the crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Deterioration of the crisis will put the Middle East at boiling point, he said, urging the Muslim world to push for proposals to put international weapon sanctions on Israel as the most urgent means to curb Israel's targeted assassination in the occupied territories.

Kharazi also called on his Arab counterparts to make effective and urgent decisions to exert pressure on Israel to stop its aggressions against the Palestinian people.

Finding solutions to the current crisis in the occupied territories is the most important issue for the Muslim world and all-out support of the Muslim and Arab world is a key factor for the victory of Palestinian Intifada (uprising) against Israel, he stressed.

The Mideast region has been rocked by continuous Palestinian- Israeli violence since last September, in which over 700 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed.

Iran, which does not recognize Israel, firmly supports the Palestinians in their fight against Israeli occupation.
