British Suspect Under Custody in Ethiopia for Abusing Children

A British national suspected of sexually abusing children has been put under custody by the Ethiopian federal police, the Ethiopian News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The suspect named David Christie was accused of abusing children when he was running an orphanage in Addis Ababa in 1996, Yilma Assefa, an investigator of the case, was quoted as saying.

Christie was arrested at the Addis Ababa airport last Friday, Yilma said, adding that the police have got the evidences to corroborate the sexual abuse committed by the suspect against children under the age of 15.

Meanwhile, Laura Williams, second secretary for political affairs and information of the British High Commission in Ethiopia, said that the vice-consul of the embassy visited Christie last Friday and "handed him a list of lawyers to contact for his defense".

Three Ethiopian boys have filed complaints proving the crimes committed by Christie, the report added.
