Taiwan's DRAM Manufacturers Face Sluggish Sale

Oversupply and falling prices have forced down the production value of DRAM (dynamic random- access memory) in Taiwan, according to reports from Taipei Tuesday.

The global production value this year is estimated to be only 14 billion U.S. dollars, as compared with 29 billion U.S. dollars the previous year, the reports quoted an industrial source as saying.

Chang Tung-lung, vice general manager of Mosel Vitelic Inc., said that DRAM manufacturers of Taiwan are facing the worst setback in business sales this year, and only a gradual recovery can be expected next year.

Chang said that the global production value of DRAM, an indispensable component of a computer, is expected to drop considerably this year due to large inventories of communications- related products and a global economic recession.

In the first quarter of this year, the sales value of DRAM manufacturers all over the world was 31 percent less than that of the same period last year. Moreover, the second quarter value was 28.5 percent less than that of the first quarter.

Mosel Vitelic, one of Taiwan's leading DRAM manufacturers, reported a 57.32 percent decline in the first six months of this year compared to the same period of 2000, according to the reports.
