Indonesia's Megawati to Visit Japan, Bosnia

Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri, leaving on Tuesday for a tour of Southeast Asia, will visit Japan and Bosnia next month as part of a trip to the United States, the official Antara news agency reported.

Antara said on Tuesday that Megawati would dedicate a mosque built in Bosnia with financial assistance from mainly Muslim Indonesia on her way to Washington, where she will meet US President George W. Bush on September 19.

During her trip to the United States, she will attend a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. Megawati would also make a working visit to key donor and investor Japan on September 28 on her way back to Indonesia, Antara added.

Megawati's week-long trip to all fellow members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be her first abroad since taking office on July 23.

But Megawati will need to be careful she doesn't spend too much time away from Indonesia.

Her sacked predecessor, Abdurrahman Wahid, became one of the world's most travelled presidents during his nearly two years in office, leaving him open to frequent attacks from critics who accused him of ignoring the archipelago's massive woes.
