Three More Sri Lankan Cabinet Ministers Offer to Resign

Three more Sri Lankan cabinet ministers volunteered to resign their posts on Monday night in a display of solidarity with President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the official Daily News said on Tuesday.

They follow a mass handing over of undated letters of resignation last Thursday by 28 deputy ministers for the same reason hoping to help Kumaratunga tide over the present political crisis she is facing with her government losing its majority in Parliament following withdrawal of main Muslim Congress party in June.

The ministers who handed over undated letters of resignation Monday were Reggie Ranatunga, Food and Marketing Development Minister, Jeevan Kumaratunga, Youth Affairs Minister and Alavi Moulana, Labor Minister.

Ranatunga said it was their duty to strengthen the president's hand at this moment without being selfish or enjoying perks.

Moulana said that at a time when sinister forces were burning the midnight oil to destabilize the country, they were prepared to stand by their leader and party.
