Int'l Seminar on Astronomy Held in Central China

Over 130 experts from China and 11 foreign countries including the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan, Germany, India and the United States are attending the Fourth International Seminar on Oriental Astronomy held in Nanyang city in central China's Henan Province.

The four-day seminar will cover history of oriental astronomy, and other academic activities. A symposium on the achievements of Chinese astronomer Zhang Heng (78-139 AD), who invented the seismograph, is also scheduled to be held at the same time.

The seminar, held every three years, was first held in Seoul of the ROK in 1993. The organizing committee decided to hold the fourth meeting in Henan, hometown of Zhang Heng, for his great contributions to the development of world's astronomy.

The seminar was co-sponsored by Zhang Heng Research Society of Henan Province, and the Institute of History of Natural Sciences under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
