Navigation Conditions at Mouth of Yangtze River ImprovedChina has improved the navigation conditions at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the world 's third longest, thanks to a 3.5 billion yuan project that has increased its large vessel passage capacity by 250 percent.Local navigation administrators said the widened and deepened deep-water navigation course at the river mouth is capable of handling 20 large vessels during each tide, compared with only eight vessels before the project was launched three years ago. The width of the course has been broadened to 300 meters from 250 meters while its depth has increased by 1.5 meters, said the administrators. The navigation condition at the mouth has been the best and the safest in the history of the port city of Shanghai, said the experts. The 6,300-km-long Yangtze River runs through eight provincial areas and meets the East China Sea at Shanghai, and the river valley is home to nearly 400 million people and the country's leading industrial and agricultural centers. |
