Chinese Fencers Targeted at Golds in Universiade

Chinese fencers preparing for the upcoming 21st Universiade are targeted at gold medals of the games' fencing competition, leader of the Chinese fencing team Wang Jian said Sunday.

China had organized a team of 24 fencers participating in six fencing events, including men's and women's epee, foil and saber, said Wang.

Chinese fencers include Wang Haibin and Dong Zhaozhi, both silver medalists at Sydney Olympic Games, Yang Shaoqi, bronze medalist at Sydney Olympics, and Zhang Jie, Meng Jie, Zhang Lei and Li Na, all promising fencers in China.

"Our fencers could most probably vie for golds of Men's foil and women's epee," Wang said.

Wang Wei, secretary general of the Chinese Fencing Association, said that more than 280 fencers from 34 countries and regions would compete in the games, including a handful of big names from traditional fencing powers such as Italy, Hungary, France and Germany.

The Chinese fencing team are preparing themselves for the Asian Games next year and Athen Olympic Games in 2004, said Wang, who is also chairman of the Technical Committee of the Asian Fencing Confederation.
