Nigeria May Miss University Games Soccer Games

Nigeria men's soccer team did not show up here on Monday with the soccer competition of the 21st World University Games to start Tuesday morning.

"The Nigerian team hasn't arrived," Zhang Heng, deputy director of the Competition Department of the Organizing Committee, told Xinhua.

"Nigeria is scheduled to play against China at 11:00 local time, " he said. "That's what I can say for now."

All the other teams for the 16-squad men's event and 12-team women's competition had arrived before Monday.

Nigeria's possible absence would leave Britain and Mexico as China's opponents in Group A with top two finishers from each of the four groups qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Host teams dominated the men's soccer title at last three Universiade in Spain's Palma de Mallorca (1999), Italy's

Sicily (1997) and Japan's Fukuoka (1995).
