East China Province Beefs Up AIDS Prevention

East China's Anhui Province has announced a decade-long strategy for prevention and control of AIDS among its 60 million residents.

Under the strategy, more publicity campaigns will be launched during the decade before 2010 to increase the awareness and knowledge about AIDS among the general public to create a better atmosphere for the prevention and control of the disease.

In the meantime, the province also plans to disseminate knowledge about AIDS among people with high risks of catching the disease in a bid to reduce their risky behaviors.

Medical departments and institutions will offer better service for HIV-positive patients or AIDS patients while making more efforts to root out transmission of the disease through blood transfusion or through the use of blood products.

The province also promised more financial input and improved policies and regulatory measures targeting prevention and control of the disease.

A total of 320 HIV-virus carriers have been discovered in the province during the past years, according to the provincial government resources.
