Manla Pivotal Hydropower Project Completed in TibetVice minister of Water Resources Chen Lei on August 19 delivered the key of Manla hydropower project to the People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region, representing completion of all the 62 projects set by the Central Government as part of the effort to help Tibet's development.Manla hydropower project is a large hydropower undertaking built on the Nianchu River, with a total of 1.447 billion yuan of investment. As one having taken the longest period of time in construction, with a designed 155 million cubic meters of reservoir capacity and an installed capacity of 20,000 kw it can irrigate 400,000 mu of land along with the others in contributing to Tibet's economic construction. Manla project will be used to a multiple purpose as for irrigation, power generation, prevention of flood and drought as well as tourism. The project will help stabilize local grain production, improve people's life and bring a great ease on electricity shortage in the Shigatse area. Manla hydropower project started construction in August 1995, passed state inspection on August 18 this year. By PD Online staff member Li Yan
