216 Die in Japan's Road Accidents During Bon HolidaysA total of 216 people died in road accidents across Japan during the 10-day Bon holiday period through Sunday, the National Police Agency (NPA) said Monday. The figure was down 42 or 16.3% from the corresponding period of mid-August holidays last year and the lowest in the past 10 years, according to the NPA. Many people return to their hometowns on the occasion of Bon, the festival of the dead. The death toll from road accidents has been on the decline since the beginning of the year, with that for the first six months marking the lowest in the past 20 years, the NPA said. By prefecture, Hokkaido topped the list of road deaths in the Bon period with 19, followed by Okayama with 17. There were no road deaths reported in Nara, Wakayama or Tokushima prefectures.
