South Korean Chosun and Donga Ilbo Owners Arrested
The President of the Chosun Ilbo, Bang Sang-hoon, former chairman of the Donga Ilbo Kim Byung-kwan and Cho Hee-joon of the Koomin Ilbo were arrested Friday after the Seoul District Court accepted petitions from the prosecution alleging tax evasion and embezzlement. Warrants for the arrest of Kim Byung-kun, also of the Donga Ilbo and Lee Tae-soo were dismissed. Earlier Bang had appeared at the court to answer questions from judges concerning the prosecution requests for his arrest.
President Bang is accused of evading paying W6.2 billion in tax and embezzling W5 billion; alongside Kim Byung-kwan and Kim Byung-kun of the Donga Ilbo, who are charged with evading W4.2 billion and W4.9 billion in tax, respectively, and the former embezzling W1.8 billion; Cho Hee-joon of the Kookmin Ilbo, evading W2.5 billion and embezzling W700 million; and Lee Tae-soo, a former chief executive of the Korea Daily News for evading W2.1 billion in taxes.
