Thailand Warned About More FloodsAfter flash-floods killed over one hundred people and caused millions of U.S. dollars in losses in northern Thailand last week, the country is warned of more heavy rainfall and floods over the next few days, the Nation TV Channel reported Sunday.The warning of the Meteorological Department came as thousands of flood sufferers in the northern provinces of Phrae, Phetchabun and Nan are struggling to overcome their loss of life and property, the report said. The department said a low pressure system passing through the north and northeast will dump heavy rains across the major parts of provinces in north, northeast and east, including Phichit, Kampaengpetch, Nakhon Sawan, Mukdahan, Mahasarakham, Kalasin, Roi- et, Sisaket, Amnatcharoen and Ubon Rachathani. Strong wind and waves could also be observed in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Thus fishermen were cautioned to check updated weather conditions while small trawlers were recommended to avoid sailing out over the next few days. The flashfloods which have started to hit northern Thailand since last Saturday have so far claimed 146 lives while hundreds of people are still missing. |
