The Russian-made MiG-27 aircraft crashed into houses in residential area along the main road from the airport to capital Colombo while conducting a low-flying exercise with another jet. It could not be pulled up probably due to technical problem, they said.
Residents said that seven people on the ground were injured with burns and admitted to the nearby Negombo hospital. One house was completely destroyed while another two were also damaged.
An investigating team has found the black box of the crashed jet.
