Pakistan Losing Millions of Dollars Annually Due To Cotton Contamination

Pakistan is losing 600 million U.S. dollars annually due to contamination in its cotton production, said the Associated Press of Pakistan APP) on Saturday.

The report cited Punjab Agriculture Secretary Rana Nasim Ahmed as saying this to a gathering of local cotton growers, traders and ginners.

Rana said Pakistan was producing a high quality cotton as far as its spinning ability and ease of dying were concerned but it fetched 8 to 10 cents less per lb. of lint in international market due to high contamination.

It is known that the Pakistani government has launched a campaign covering the entire cotton growing area of Punjab province to produce contamination free cotton during the current year with the cooperation of growers, traders and ginners.

The Punjab Agriculture Department would pursue a three-pronged strategy for the implementation of the campaign including awareness raising through mass media, training of the pickers and cotton transport and storage in conform with hygienic standard.
