Business with Nepal Dominates Tibet's Border Trade

Business with neighboring Nepal accounted for 90 percent of the Tibet Autonomous Region's border trade in 2000, said Chairman Legqog of the regional People's Government in an interview with a Nepal television station Friday.

Nepalese businessmen mainly import silk, gray fabric and household appliances from Tibet, while Tibet takes such goods as flour, vegetable oil and incense from Nepal.

According to Legog, there are five ports and 28 markets along the border. One of the ports trades with both India and Nepal.

The chairman also said that with the help from the central government and other provinces and municipalities, the region has scored great social and economic achievements since its peaceful liberation 50 years ago.
