Premier Zhu Expresses Sympathy for Flood Disaster in Thailand

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji sent a message to Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra Saturday, expressing his sympathy for the recent flood disaster in that country.

"I was shocked to learn that floods hit the northern and northeastern part of your country recently and brought great damage to the people and property," Zhu said in the message.

"I would like to express, on behalf of the Chinese government and in my own name, our sincere sympathy to your excellency and through you to your people in the afflicted areas," Zhu said.

The floods, which occurred after heavy rains, began last Saturday. It hit six northern and two northeastern provinces, but the worst affected area was Lomsak district of Phetchabun province.

Up to now, the death toll from the disaster rose to 147, with nine others missing.
