Piracy Activities Firmly Under Control in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Commissioner of Customs and Excise Raymond Wong Hung-chiu Friday stressed that piracy activities are well under control as a result of Customs vigorous enforcement actions.

Wong was speaking at a ceremony in which he received plaques from representatives from the Motion Picture Association, the Hong Kong Theaters Association and the Motion Picture Association Asia Pacific Operations, in appreciation of the Department's tremendous efforts and remarkable achievement in combating copyright over the years.

"Officers from the Customs Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau and Special Task Force have detected more than 5 300 piracy cases and arrested 723 people in the first half of this year," Wong said.

He noted that enforcement results were significant as the total value of the seizure exceeded 88 million HK dollars (about 10 million U.S. dollars). This represents an increase of 126 percent in the cases as compared with those made in the same period last year.

"We are also delighted to see the film industry, once threatened by piracy activities in the past few years, booming again, in particular in this summer holiday several newly-released films have shown a box-office success," the commissioner said.

"This not only reflects the public's recognition of the hard work of our film practitioners, but also proves that piracy activity has been shrinking in Hong Kong," Wong added.
