China to Shift Catalogue to Authentication Management of Vehicles

An authoritative person with the Industry Department of State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC) told that catalogue management of vehicles will give way to one of authentication in China, asking technology upgrading by all auto makers in China.

China began to carry out compulsory auto checkup in 1995 with test items up to 40 from original 12. SETC issued a circular in April, demanding auto makers go through the 40 items of tests when declaring for new vehicles. Among the 1,600 auto products declared, only few were qualified.

In view of such condition, the authoritative person with SETC stressed that state compulsory standards must be firmly carried out. All vehicles must meet those of compulsory standards as necessitated for putting into effect the vehicle authentication system and promoting auto technology upgrading and it is also conducive for manufacturers to improve self-discipline awareness.

The person also said that upgrading of auto products should be considered as the first priority to all auto manufacturers. Vehicles that fail to meet the standards regarding safety, energy saving, environment protection will go obsolete gradually through competition. As China's WTO entry is nearing, auto industry should speed up technology advancement and develop new products, during the transition period, all manufacturers should improve the overall level of their products and meet competitions by manufacturers of the whole auto industry.
