Chen Hong Upset in Singapore Open Badminton

China's Chen Hong, the world's No. 1 shuttler, crashed out of the 120,000 US dollars Yonex- Sunrise Singapore Open after losing to Malaysia's Ismail Saman on Thursday, the second day of the tournament.

Saman outclassed the Chinese ace 2-7, 8-6, 7-8, 7-0, 7-5.

Chen said he injured the fingers on his left hand during the match and was disappointed in his performance.

Ismail, ranked 58th in the world, will now meet Thailand's Boonsak Polsana, who defeated Indian Sachin Ratti 8-6, 7-4, 2-7, 7- 4.

Indonesia's Rony Agustinus was beaten by Malaysian Muhamad Hafiz Hasim 7-2, 7-3, 7-1.

World No. 3 Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia fended off a spirited challenge by Malaysia's Ramesh Nathan to win 7-8, 7-5, 7-5, 7-5. He will face China's Chen Yu in the third round.

China's Bao Chunlai was defeated by his compatriot Lin Dan 7-4, 7-4, 7-5.

Singapore's Indra Wijaya defeated India's Chetan Anand 7-4, 7-0, 7-3, and may have a tough time tonight when he takes on Indonesia' s Budi Santoso.

There were no shock exits in the women's singles.

Denmark's fourth ranked Camilla Martin and China's Gong Zhichao moved into Friday's quarterfinals. Martin defeated Indonesia's Atu Rosalina 8-6, 7-0, 7-1, while Gong beat Malaysia's Lee Yin Yin 7-2, 7-0, 5-7, 7-2.

Singapore's Liu Zhen was knocked out of the race by China's Dai Yun in straight sets 7-1, 7-0, 7-2. She was the last Singaporean shuttler in the women's singles event.
