Fuzhou Develops Ecological ForestsThis capital of south China's Fujian Province is stepping up efforts to construct four major ecological forests. The projects involve a coastal forestry protection area, the green screen project around Fuzhou, the ecological project along the Minjiang and Aojiang rivers and the bio-diversity program. Over the past three years, the city has completed the planting of 93,500 hectares of forest land along the rivers, with the forest coverage ratio up from 31.9 percent in 1987 to 43.2 percent last year, local sources said. The green screen project, started in 1997, is set to beautify Fuzhou's downtown and outskirts with green trees and grass. More than 2,133 hectares of barren mountains have been turned into green hills, and some 400 hectares of farmland have been returned to forests. By the end of June this year, Fuzhou had planned to establish nine large wildlife nature reserves and 145 smaller ones, with an overall area of 67,389 hectares, accounting for 5.6 percent of the city's total area. |
