Hebei Provincial TV Station Introduces Paid VOD Channel

VOD is now available on Hebei TV Station Program 5. It is reported that Hebei TV station is the first station to provide the VOD business in China.

As Sources say, the VOD program provides round-the-clock service. Thousands upon thousands of families can make their choices of favorite movies and plays to be played from the very beginning in several minutes. Audience is able to see once for four volumes of their favorite serial plays without the interruption of advertisements. "Rolling News" provides news program to those who did not see the CCTV news and Provincial news in time at any moment. "Stock Market Online" enables the shareholders to conduct stock transactions and search for information through TV program. "Pictures & Literary Information" includes all domestic and international news updated by Xinhua News Agency every day. Audience can browse the news just like what they do on the Internet; "Fashion Handbook" provides practical family teaching concerning household fitments, appliance maintenance, automobile service, cooking, cosmetology, etc: "Education Stage" include children's movie and plays, cartoons and education consultation.

According to the introduction, Hebei VOD (video-on-demand) program is developed on the basis of the current co-existing optical fiber and coaxial one-way network. It adopts digital compression as means of transmission, digital set top box as its terminal, and deposit card for payment. More than ten sets of programs and other information can be played in three analogue traditional channels.

Since there is no similar experience in China to refer to, the arrangement of the program, adjustment of the technology and development of the market are still in an experimental period. Only when it is approved by State Administration of Radio, Film and Television after one-year running, can it be put into formal operation.
