Indonesian President Vows to Fight Corruption

Indonesia's newly initiated President Megawati Soekarnoputri pledged to fight corruption, collusion and nepotism (KKN) during her traditional annual speech to mark the opening of the assembly session of Parliament (DPR) on Thursday.

While giving her official address at the opening session, Megawati reiterated her determination to combat corruption in the country. She further reiterated the harm and long negative effect of nepotism had caused to the country, saying she had warned her family members of staying away from any corruption and nepotism.

"They have pledged their promise, I hope that they can stand against the temptations that might emerge from their environments, " said Megawati.

She noted that the willingness for not to commit corruption has to be started by now, saying that it is one good little step toward the huge social changes. She hoped that the country can soon be included in the "well governed state" category in the world.

"With gradual steps and not very long time, we will be in the state that has a good rank in the well-organized category country, " said Megawati.

Citing the matters that have been experienced by several neighboring countries, Megawati explained that the citizens' welfare always comes along with a well organized and clean government.

Indonesia has long been overwhelmed by KKN practices, particularly in former President Soeharto's administration. Some former state officials and legislators had been summoned to the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to be questioned over the corruption cases that they have been committed in the past when they charged their posts. However none of them had been prosecuted for their misdeeds.
