More Farmland in East China Province

Local governments at various levels in east China's Fujian Province have taken measures to tap new resources of arable land, and their efforts have shown positive results.

In the first half of this year, the acreage of the province's arable land increased by 1,273 hectares.

The per capita arable land in Fujian is only 0.04 hectares, far below the country's average, and also below the norm set by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization.

The province has introduced a series of preferential policies to encourage farmers or collectives to develop land resources for later use.

Moreover, the Land Resources Department of Fujian has mapped out 155 land development projects and completed feasibility studies for 234 key projects. Over 170 million yuan has been earmarked for this purpose, and has been allocated to various regions.

The province is set to increase the acreage of its farmland by 6,000 hectares this year to maintain a stable food supply.
