Poverty Relief Program Brings Poor Kids Back to School

Poverty relief programs have helped some 15,000 poor children in this capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province back to school, according to the latest statistics.

During the past five years, the Fund for Poverty Relief in Shaanxi has accumulatively input more than 5 million yuan (about 613,800 US dollars) to help children buy books and other necessities for study.

In addition, each of the children receives 50 yuan per semester.

These children live in the Qinling and Bashan mountainous areas, where 18 state-designated poverty-stricken counties are located, and the equally-poor Fuping County.

These children either could not be enrolled in time or had to drop out of school halfway.

Now, they have been admitted by over 2,000 schools in some 916 villages and towns.

Since 1996, around 4,000 children have graduated from primary schools and entered junior high schools.
