Tibetan Women Urged to Improve Education

Tibetan women should improve their education and quality of life, an official of the All-China Women' s Federation said Wednesday in Lhasa.

Tian Shulan, vice-president of the federation, was speaking at a conference of the women federation presidents of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Tian attributed the region's economic progress and social stability partly to the efforts made by Tibetan women.

Du Qiyuan, president of the region's women's federation, expressed hope that all federation staff would continue to guide Tibetan women to contribute to economic development and national unity.

She said that women in rural areas should be encouraged to get rid of illiteracy and learn about science and technology.

Official statistics showed that by the end of 2000, there were 24,000 women in government posts, accounting for one third of the total. The figure was 2.49 percent higher than that of 1995.
