Arab Committee to Discuss Worsening Situation in Palestinian Territories

The foreign ministers of an Arab follow-up committee will hold an emergency meeting "soon" to discuss the worsening situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, the Arab League chief said late Wednesday.

Amr Moussa made the remarks at a news conference after a meeting grouping him, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan to deal with the gravity of the Mideast situation.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdel Ilah al-Khatib said that Moussa will hold consultations with Arab countries "as soon as possible" on the Arab ministerial meeting, to be held at the request of Arafat, who arrived here late Tuesday for the four-way meeting.

The Arab follow-up committee, set up at the emergency Arab summit in Cairo last October, deals with the implementation of resolutions adopted at the summit, in which Arab leaders pledged to provide moral and financial aid to the Palestinian uprising.

The Mideast region has been rocked by continued Palestinian- Israeli violence since last September, which has left nearly 700 people dead, most of them Palestinians.
