English Woman Gives Birth to Six; One Dies

An English woman gave birth to sextuplets last week at a Newcastle hospital, a hospital official said Wednesday. One baby died four days later.

The six were delivered Aug. 9 by Caesarean section 12 weeks premature, according to the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The smallest one, a girl, died Sunday following complication. The other five remained in stable condition in a neonatal intensive care unit.

The six babies two boys and four girls had birth weights ranging from 11.9 ounces to 2.2 pounds.

The parents were not identified.

It wasn't immediately known if the births were the result of fertility treatments. However, such treatments have caused an explosion in multiple births.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest multiple birth was nine babies in Sydney, Australia, in 1971. All the children subsequently died.

The highest number of babies ever to have survived from one birth is believed to be seven.
